Don't forget about website security

Website business owners are constantly trying to improve business.  What many don’t realize is that by improving their website security, they can improve their sales.  Customers say that the security of a website is the number one reason why they do or do not shop on particular websites.

Website security is very important.  Take the following examples: Would you walk out your front door leaving it open while leaving for a one week vacation? Would you park your car in the center of the city with the windows rolled down and your laptop on the front seat? I am sure you are thinking “Why in the world would I do that, I’m not stupid!”.  Of course, the majority of us would never do any of these things on purpose because it is the way we keep the basic measures of life safe.  As in regular life, there are many security measures that should be taken as a website business owner.

Think of your website as your home.  Most of those who enter your house and your neighborhood are good people, but there are a few that may want to do you harm.  They may want to break in to your house, or in this case, your website and steal important things.  Unfortunately, internet crime is one of the fastest growing types of crime.  We always hear about websites that get hacked, get passwords or credit card information stolen and get infected with viruses.  This can cause your website as well as your reputation, a lot of harm.

One misconception is that one form of security exists to protect every part of your website.  In all actuality, there are many different types and levels of security.  Some of the most important types of website security are as follows: Anti-virus software, managing your website over encrypted connections, verifying that your website is legitimate by displaying privacy policies and trust seals, having PCI scans performed at least quarterly, and being proactive about keeping your website current with the always changing world of technology.

Most of all, keep in mind that when you support your website with the appropriate website security, you are increasing the trust of your customers, which in return increases sales for you.  Website security is essential, make sure you are doing all that you can to ensure a safe site for you and your customers.
