Site Security and SSL

In an attempt to help you provide you with the best site security out there, I decided to present some information about SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates.  While SSL is very important part of website security, you should know that SSL alone is not enough!  If you have never heard about SSL, I will explain.  Secure Sockets Layer technology protects your website and makes it known to your customers that shopping on your site is safe.

An SSL certificate uses encryption for sensitive information during online transactions.  Encryption jumbles the data as it is transmitting across the internet so that the private information is kept safe. Each SSL certificate holds unique information about the certificate owner and then a certificate authority confirms the identity of the certificate owner when it is issued.

If you have an online store and accept credit cards on the internet, you need to a SSL certificate.  Also, if you require your customers to have a login or sign in on your site, you need SSL.  If you process personal info like address, birth date, license or id numbers.  Especially if you value privacy and want your customers to trust you, then you will get a SSL certificate.

If you are an online shopper, it is important that you look for a website with SSL before you put in any private information.  You will know if you’re on a site with SSL because you will see that “https” is in the address line instead of “http”.  Also, you will notice a small padlock in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window.

Site security is vital if you plan on making your business successful.  SSL certificates are so important to your online website but remember that you need more than that.  The SSL certificate only protects data transfers, not your whole site. Think about using other security measures like third party business verification, privacy policies, and being PCI compliant with the use of pci scanning.
